Bounded by Washington Ave., Jackson Ave., St. Charles Ave., and the Mississippi River, the Garden District was settled by wealthy American merchants who built magnificent mansions surrounded by elegant gardens in stark contrast to their Creole rivals who preferred close quarters with interior courtyards and secluded lives.
